BrightFarms and A&P Expand Partnership to Pennsylvania

A&P will offer BrightFarms’ locally grown produce at Superfresh stores

NEW YORK, NY, and MONTVALE, NJ, August 30, 2012—BrightFarms, Inc. and The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, Inc. (A&P) today announced an expansion of their partnership to deliver year-round local produce at A&P’s family of stores. A&P has agreed to sell produce from BrightFarms 50,000 square foot, state-of-the-art greenhouse in Yardley, PA at its Superfresh banner in Philadelphia.

In June, A&P signed a long-term produce purchase agreement (PPA) to be the exclusive retailer of produce grown in BrightFarms’ Brooklyn greenhouse. This innovative model allows BrightFarms to finance, build, and operate greenhouses at or near supermarkets, delivering fresher, more flavorful produce year round.

BrightFarms officially broke ground on its Pennsylvania greenhouse this summer. The greenhouse will be harvesting greens by the end of 2012 and harvest tomatoes in early 2013. Each year, the greenhouse will grow up to 500,000 pounds of local lettuce, herb, and tomato varieties.

“I’m thrilled to grow our relationship with A&P, which continues to be a tremendous partner,” says BrightFarms CEO Paul Lightfoot. “This expansion of our partnership reflects our companies’ commitment to customers and to each other.”

“We cannot wait to offer our Philadelphia customers the freshest, most flavorful, locally grown produce 365 days a year,” says Sam Martin, President and CEO of A&P. “BrightFarms’ model fully supports our commitment to being the number one food and drug store in the neighborhoods we serve.”
